Building and Filling the Water Workforce Pipeline

May 7 & 8, 2024
8:00 AM - 4:00 PM each day

Hosted by: Metro Water Recovery Northern Treatment Plant (NTP) Visitor’s Center, 51 Baseline Road, Brighton, CO, 80603

Affordable registration fee: $120 for AWWA and RMWEA members; $160 for Non-members (meals are included)

This live, interactive workshop has been developed and will be facilitated by the RMSAWWA Sustainable Workforce Committee, including Cindy Goodburn, who is also the chair of the national AWWA Workforce Strategies Committee.

This workshop is a continuation of the efforts of more than 30 utility managers, human resources professionals, trainers and educators who convened in Castle Rock, CO in May 2022.  That workshop was part of a nationwide effort to address the challenges of sustaining our water sector workforce and linked to USEPA’s Sustainable Water Workforce Initiative.

This “convening 2.0” continues to address the ongoing challenges of the water sector to “find and keep” a sustainable workforce.   The emphasis will be on recruiting and retention, and once again will feature presentations from managers, human resource professionals, and education/training specialists from water sector and public works organizations.  There will be interactive panel discussions, small group discussions, facilitated plenary sessions, and a chance to participate in the development of programs and initiatives that will emerge from the presentations and discussions held in the workshop.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES

  • To gather a diverse group of managers from across the water sector (utilities, consultants, service providers), along with HR professionals, educators. and other stakeholders.
  • To convene in an interactive and collaborative setting to share and learn from the experiences we all face in finding and keeping a sustainable water sector workforce.
  • To identify opportunities to strengthen existing partnerships and create new ones to build and fill the water sector workforce pipeline.
  • To initiate meaningful projects, activities, and programs to support our efforts.

Contact hours (6.0 per day) are being submitted for approval by the respective state agencies in Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico.

For more information about the program, please contact either Cindy Goodburn at cindy@cgoodburnconsulting.com or 303-435-1104 OR Jim Ginley at jim.ginley23@gmail.com or 720-878-8523.

Reflections on a Quarter Century of Water Management in New Mexico*

(*we really have made some progress...).

Dagmar Llewelyn
Bureau of Reclamation

ABSTRACT:

In New Mexico, we are passionate about water management, but also love to grumble about its state, with a focus on what needs to change. But when Dagmar was asked to reflect for this talk on her work in New Mexico, what stood out in her mind was how far we have come - in managing our rivers as ecosystems, giving authority to our water management agencies to manage water in a way that is more consistent with our cultural history, honoring our First Peoples, and starting to look seriously at the coming impacts of a changing climate on our life here, so we can use the resilience our communities have long shown to prepare for a challenging future.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY:

Dagmar Llewellyn has worked in water management for close to 40 years, and devotedher efforts to water management in New Mexico since 2000, working both as a contractor to the State of New Mexico and for the Bureau of Reclamation Albuquerque Area Office and now, Upper Colorado Basin Regional Office.

SESSION DESCRIPTION: Whew! You finallyfinally! - landed the perfect candidate to fill that hard-to-fill vacancy. And you can’t wait for this person to start so you – and your operations – can get back to normal. But wait: what’s your plan for orienting, mentoring, and supporting your new hire? In this webinar, Karen Main will share her strategies and tips for creating an effective onboarding strategy. It doesn’t have to be complicated, or expensive, but it does have to be customized to your work environment. Learn what to avoid during the first few days and months of your new hire’s experience. And be prepared to share your experiences, strategies, and ideas with your colleagues. It’s time to transform orientation and onboarding into a new sticky situation!

“Culture Leadership: The Crusade to Retain Talent"

Bret Anderson
h2 Communications

Training Unit approval for Colorado, New Mexico & Wyoming is pending

 SESSION DESCRIPTION:

Current talent management research has found that the primary stimulant of a successful company is the talent within a business rather than the amount of capital or wealth the company accumulates. Talent management is defined as an organizations ability to attract, recruit, train, performance manage, and retain qualified candidates with competitive backgrounds. The findings of this body of research show that if a company does not provide attention to retaining and developing existing employees, most will leave within five years (or sooner based on current economic conditions).   Furthermore, hiring a high-potential employee has become inadequate to sustain business growth and competitiveness.  Developing a cadre of culture leaders within an organization is one of the empirically hidden research components related to how a corporate culture can keep talented employees and thus more succinctly provide architecture on how a company can maintain productivity.  Essentially, culture leaders define, energize, and operationalize an organization’s work environment not only its profit margins.

 SPEAKER BACKGROUND
Bret Anderson, Ph.D. is the President of h2 Communication, LLC® (h2C) a Veteran Owned Small Business Job Readiness Training and Executive Coaching and Frontline Leadership Development company. Candice Gottlieb-Clark
Dynamic Team Solutions

Training Unit approval for Colorado, New Mexico & Wyoming is pending

 SESSION DESCRIPTION:
Opportunities for conflict are everywhere: From differences in personality and communication styles to divides emerging out of generational differences and deeply held beliefs around sex, race, and politics. Complicate that with a little remote work, and even the most successful leaders can find themselves losing focus on important goals when minor issues seep into the fabric of your team or explode into a time-consuming crisis. Because left alone, conflicts – big and small – undermine the very foundation of your organization.

It’s time to build a new perspective on conflict and learn some simple communication strategies to navigate these workplace challenges with ease and success.
