“Are You Managing a Machine…or Leading in a Living System? An Introduction to Systemic Leadership in a VUCA Environment”
David Knapp, Ph.D.
Marathon Leadership
SESSION DESCRIPTION:
Modern leaders face a host of challenges: a volatile global economy, significant changes in workplace demographics, increased stakeholder expectations, and an accelerated rate of change that is unparalleled in world history. And that was BEFORE a global pandemic upended the status quo in 2020! Yet far too many leaders are still operating under a “managing a machine” mentality that ignores their current circumstances. To that end, this highly interactive and entertaining session will help leaders approach their day-to-day leadership in a more systemic fashion, one designed for the modern VUCA environment (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous). Learning Objectives - Understand the key differences between managing a machine and leading in a living system;
- Recognize the challenges of leading systemically in a VUCA environment (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous);
- Incorporate the VUCA Prime model into their day-to-day leadership behaviors; and
- Avoid and/or overcome two of the biggest traps of the systems-based, VUCA world (“Accidental Adversaries” and “Fixes That Fail”) by applying “The Five W’s and H” and “Types of Problems” tools.
