June 2021 Technical Noon Webinar
By Zoom Videoconferencing Technology (Registration is Required - See Details Below) Wednesday June 16, 2021 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Combining URGWOM and HEC-RAS Mobile-Bed Models: A Case Study
Kyle Shour
Tetra Tech Engineering Services Company
ABSTRACT: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Albuquerque District (USACE) and Tetra Tech have long collaborated on the development of two models: The Upper Rio Grande Water Operations Model (URGWOM) and a mobile-bed sediment transport HEC-RAS model that extends from Cochiti Dam to Elephant Butte Reservoir (170 river miles). URGWOM is a daily and monthly timestep water operations hydrology model used by USACE, U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation, and the New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission to forecast dam operations and river flow. The Middle Rio Grande HEC-RAS mobile-bed sediment transport model developed by Tetra Tech for USACE to understand how various flood control and irrigation projects have impacted the geomorphic evolution of the Middle Rio Grande. Using results of a 2017 URGWOM planning study, the two models were run in sequence. This presentation will demonstrate how existing models developed for different purposes can be combined to provide valuable insight into river planning.
SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY: Kyle Shour (kyle.shour@tetratech.com) attended UNM, researching sediment transport and geomorphic change in river restoration features on the Rio Grande in Albuquerque and developed physical models for AMAFCA and the NMDOT. After completing his master’s degree, Mr. Shour began working for Tetra Tech in Albuquerque on projects related to hydrographic data collection, dam operations hydrology, open channel hydraulics, sediment transport, and geomorphology. He now resides in Grand Rapids, Michigan with his wife and two children. He enjoys hiking, mountain biking, and trail running.
REGISTRATION: Registration is limited to the first 100 participants. All attendees must pre-register for this webinar by Tuesday evening, 6/15/21 at 5:00 p.m. This is required to maintain a record of those attending to satisfy training requirements for PE licensure or Water/Wastewater Operator Certification. Operators will be asked for NM Operator Certification number on the online registration form. Continuing education is only available in New Mexico.
JULY WEBINAR: Scott Salvas, P.E., and brewmaster/owner at Brew Lab 101 Beer & Cider Co. (https://brewlab.com) will give a presentation on the water chemistry and biotechnology of brewing on the evening of July 28, followed by a beer tasting and social hour.
