Studies and Strategies to Minimize Disinfection By-Products
Cassia Sanchez (
Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority)
ABSTRACT:
The Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority (ABCWUA) takes a pro-active approach to optimizing water quality in accordance with the goals of the Partnership for Safe Water to improve performance beyond regulatory requirements. ABCWUA has been monitoring for disinfection byproducts (DBP) systemwide and studying the conditions under which DBP formation occurs.
The ABCWUA Water Quality Program has conducted multiple bench-top studies to evaluate the formation of DBPs while varying source water, temperature, and chlorine residual over time. Additionally, TTHM are monitored in the distribution system and at reservoirs with the highest water age and therefore, increased potential for DBP formation. Operations has worked to install and maintain equipment in these reservoirs to treat TTHM and reduce the need to flush water in the hottest months. This presentation will cover the findings from the studies and operational strategies to counteract TTHM formation.
