This workshop is part of a nationwide effort to address the challenges of sustaining our water sector workforce and linked to USEPA’s recently released Sustainable Water Workforce Initiative. Utilizing USEPA’s “four pillars of a sustainable workforce” framework (Recruiting, Retention, Competency, Partnerships), the workshop will feature presentations from managers, human resource professionals, and education/training specialists from water sector and public works organizations.  There will be interactive panel discussions, small group discussions, facilitated plenary sessions, and a chance to provide input to the development of programs and initiatives that will emerge from the presentations and discussions held in the workshop.

Highlights of the program/learning objectives include:

  • Drivers for nationwide initiative spearheaded by USEPA’s Sustainability Program;
  • Presentation of national initiatives led by AWWA, WEF, and APWA;
  • Recruiting and retention challenges experienced by utilities and public works organizations, as well as successful strategies deployed in Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico;
  • Case examples of effective training and professional development, including internships, apprenticeships, and on-site programs;
  • Presentation and discussion on the “power of partnerships” and how all organizations can benefit from improved relationships both inside your organization and across the communities you serve; and
  • Consolidated “findings report” that will capture ideas and turn them into actionable programs after the workshop.

This live, interactive workshop has been developed and will be facilitated by the RMSAWWA Utility Management Committee, including Cindy Goodburn, who is also the chair of the national AWWA Workforce Strategies Committee, and Richard Gerstberger, long-time instructor for the Leadership and Supervisory Certificate Program that has trained more than 400 managers and supervisors since 2012.

Contact hours (6.0 per day) are being submitted for approval by the respective state agencies in Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico.
