The ABCWUA Water Supply System: Current Operations & Future Plans

Diane Agnew (Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority)

ABSTRACT

The Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority (Water Authority) currently has surface water and groundwater supply sources that it is able to utilize to meet customer demand. Additional supply alternatives that the Water Authority has include reuse for irrigation of greens spaces and aquifer storage and recovery. Through the implementation of the Water Authority’s 100-year water management strategy, Water 2120: Securing Our Water Future, the Water Authority has identified multiple projects that can be implemented to extend the existing supplies as well as add additional supply alternatives. This allows the Water Authority to adapt to changed supply conditions, including changed surface water supply, as a result of climate change. Additionally, through the expansion of the Water Authority’s ASR program and implementation of its source water protection program, the Water Authority is building a sustainable water supply into the future. Primary focus of this presentation will be an overview of the Water Authority’s operations from source to customer, discussing key considerations that exist today and that are expected in the future.
