Wednesday, October 19, 2022 | 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Fundamentals of Water Resource Recovery Process Modeling Using the Sumo Simulator Joel Rife, P.E. Jacobs Engineering ABSTRACT:
Using computer-based treatment process simulators for design of our water resource recovery facilities has become standard industry practice. For many years, the BioWin model has dominated the market but in recent years a new model, Sumo, is seeing increased usage. The biggest difference between BioWin and Sumo is Sumo is an open-source model, allowing the experienced user to view the code that’s used for simulating the physical and biological processes that occur in our plant processes, with important ramifications related to the liability of the user when using the model for design of increasingly complicated and costly treatment plants. This talk will focus on modeling fundamentals, using the Sumo model to build a basic treatment plant model and showing the audience what data is required to configure and calibrate a model. SPEAKER BIOGRAPY:
Joel Rife has 43 years of experience in water resource recovery treatment engineering and is a Senior Technologist for Jacobs. Mr. Rife has expertise in most areas of the treatment process but specializes in the design of headworks facilities, nutrient removal facilities and whole plant modeling. He is author of several WEF Publications including being Primary Author of Chapter 11 of “Design of Water Resource Recovery Facilities” “Operation of Nutrient Removal Facilities,” “Membrane BioReactors,” “Shortcut Nitrogen Removal” and “Guidelines for Grit Sampling and Characterization.” Mr. Rife holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering and M.S. in Environmental Engineering from Kansas University and was an understudy to Dr. Ross McKinney, the first researcher to model the biological interactions of the activated sludge processt. REGISTRATION:
Membership in AWWA or WEF is not required. All attendees must pre-register for this webinar by Tuesday evening, 10/18/22 at 5:00 p.m. This is required to maintain a record of those attending to satisfy training requirements for PE licensure or Water/Wastewater Operator Certification. Operators will be asked for NM Operator Certification number on the online registration form. Continuing Education is only available in New Mexico.
NOVEMBER WEBINAR:
Zaid Chowdhury, Garver, “Understanding New Modifications to the Lead and Copper Rule.” Tentatively scheduled for November 16, though the date may change.
