Water Rising? An Overview of Upcoming and Proposed Changes to Floodplain Management and Flood Standards

ABSTRACTIn a world of nearly unlimited amounts of data and faced with unprecedented extreme weather events, the areas floodplain management and flood standards are undergoing a transformation from the status quo. Centered around the National Flood Insurance Program, this webinar will focus on how various standards like NOAA Atlas precipitation estimates and insurance premium ratings are being updated or proposed to be modified with respect to more data, climate change, and a transition from a hazard-based view of flooding to a risk-based view.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPY:  Mrs. Friedt is the Director of Planning & Engineering for AMAFCA. She attended the University of New Mexico and received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and is a PE in New Mexico and a Certified Floodplain Manager. Mrs. Friedt has over 20 years of experience working the private and public sector with a majority of the that time emphasized on storm water engineering.

Mr. Romero is currently the Drainage Engineer for AMAFCA. He obtained a bachelor’s and master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of New Mexico and is a PE in New Mexico and a Certified Floodplain Manager. Mr. Romero has nearly 10 years of experience working in drainage and stormwater management with a large focus on hydrologic and hydraulic modeling.

REGISTRATION:  Membership in AWWA or WEF is not required. Registration is limited, so please register early. All attendees must pre-register for this webinar by Tuesday evening, 11/19/24 at 5:00 p.m.  Water and wastewater operators will be asked for NM Operator Certification number on the online registration form.

UPCOMING EVENT:   There will be no webinar in December so we can all prepare our luminarias. If anybody needs sand contact the AMAFCA office (www.AMAFCA.org), they’ve got tens of thousands of cubic yards of sand that is perfect for luminarias (also shopping carts, water logged couches, WalMart plastic bags, and other miscellaneous debris available free of charge).
