2023 RMSAWWA Award Winners

The RMSAWWA Awards Committee is excited to introduce you to our 2023 Award winners!

Our industry works because of those individuals and teams that work together to achieve excellence.  

RALPH M. LEIDHOLDT
OUTSTANDING WTP OPERATOR
John G. Droullard, Sr. - Centennial Water & Sanitation District
 

 This award is to recognize an outstanding water treatment plant operator within the Rocky Mountain Section of American Water Works Association. It's awarded annually to recognize a water treatment plant operator for exceptional performance, dedication and teamwork.


 
John is the lead operator at the Joseph Blake Water Treatment Plant (WTP).  The WTP is a 40 MGD a conventional filtration plant treating a mix of water from the Chatfield, South Platte, and McLellan reservoirs. 
 
John has worked for Centennial WSD for over 30 years, helping to provide safe drinking water to Highlands Ranch citizens for 20 years.  He has lead and overseen infrastructure replacement, process changes, capacity expansion, and treatment optimization.
 
John’s sense of stewardship and commitment, extends beyond the District to Colorado and the industry. This includes training and mentorship of younger operators. as well as leading informational and training tours of the WTP

     
OUTSTANDING WTP MAINTENANCE AWARD
Andy Smith, Centennial Water & Sanitation District
 
Given in recognition of an outstanding water treatment plant maintenance professional for exceptional performance, dedication, and teamwork.  



 Andy has worked for Centennial WSD for 12 years, leading the maintenance team for much of that time.  He has been involved in

  • Creation and implementation of the asset management system
  •  Countless internal upgrades and retro-fits to process areas
  •  Responding to countless emergencies
  • Serving as the main contact for the general contractors during construction projects.
  •  Leading maintenance crew safety meetings
Andy is a recognized leader for Centennial WSD and has received the Outstanding Achievement Award 4 times in the last 10 years, not to mention the Falcon Award in 2020 and 2021. In addition to consistently doing excellent work, Andy also creates a positive work environment with his attitude and is willing to work outside of his job description…even helping out with wastewater treatment emergencies.
A direct report had this to say, “Andy is always the first one in and the last one out, he’s consistently breaking his back to help out.  Andy’s leadership style is – follow me – he always takes the first step, and his crew follows.”
     
OUTSTANDING WATER LABORATORY
Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority
Water Quality Lab
 
  This award is to recognize an outstanding water laboratory within the Rocky Mountain Section of American Water Works Association.  It is awarded annually to recognize a water laboratory for exceptional performance, dedication and teamwork.

 
   

Sean Hardeman and his 16 employees perform laboratory testing to support the Authority’s potable water, non-potable water, and water biosolids operations.


The Authority’s water treatment includes a conventional filtration surface water plant, groundwater treatment at 15 different well fields, and disinfection at 5 direct inject wells.  In addition, there are 5 Arsenic removal sites.

The Authority’s water quality laboratory was nominated forupgrades to treatment methodologies including:

  • Moving Copper testing to the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS)
  • Implementing the KED model using hydrogen gas for the analysis of Selenium.  For all of us not in the laboratory daily, the KED mode (kinetic energy discrimination) is used to reduce spectral interferences from polyatomic ions.  That may or may not have been a helpful explanation
  • Adding a fecal test to their accreditation is support analyzing compost samples for the Soil Amendment Facility
  • Supporting the Southside Water Reclamation Plant and groundwater operations by developing a chlorine demand curve.
