“Cultivating and Fostering a Workplace of Civility”
Sejal Thakkar
Chief Civility Officer

SESSION DESCRIPTION:

Everyone deserves to feel welcome, supported, and valued at work. Cultural change within a company is typically an evolutionary process. A series of daily decisions and behaviors exhibited by each person within a company indirectly shapes that culture.

Civility in an essential aspect of every work environment. Everyone has a responsibility to monitor their own behavior to ensure that it is appropriate and aligned with organizational values and policies. I will teach your team the norms of acceptable workplace conduct and how to identify, prevent and respond professionally to any workplace incivility situations.

Diversity and globalization bring people from different cultures into contact with one another. These differences can cause friction between people if we react negatively to those differences. If not properly managed, the friction can turn into conflict quickly. This highly interactive training utilizes storytelling, facilitated discussion, and scenarios to help employees and managers build skills to proactively identify their own unconscious biases and mitigate subtle acts of exclusion to foster a more diverse, unified, and connected workforce.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Understand the Uncivil Behavior Spectrum
  2. Analyze and review examples of non-inclusive behavior
  3. Define civility and examine why workplace civility is important
  4. Learn what to do when you are a victim of, or witness to, uncivil behaviors
  5. Review the benefits and challenges of diversity at work
  6. Recognize unconscious bias and how it can impact all aspects of business decision-making and business practices
  7. Learn how to effectively address subtle acts of exclusion/microaggressions in the workplace
  8. Understand how to create a welcoming environment both internally and externally
SPEAKER BACKGROUND

Sejal Thakkar was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois and experienced discrimination at a very early age. Even though she is a native-born American who speaks unaccented English, she is also the daughter of immigrants from India. Once her classmates discovered that the store across the street from their school was owned by her immigrant parents who did have accents, her problems began.

Sejal was bullied and ridiculed throughout adolescence. She was “the marginal other” in a country she’d been born in. These childhood experiences left a lasting impression, helping her transmute a negative experience into a positive call to action for change.

Sejal went on to graduate with honors from the University of Illinois at Chicago and Cum Laude from Northern Illinois College of Law. After moving to Northern California’s San Francisco Bay Area in 2000, she gained extensive experience in employment law. Through TrainXtra, she blends her personal experiences and professional legal knowledge to educate others on the topics of civility, discrimination, bullying, and harassment.
